A Santa Cruz Beach Engagement: Sun, Sand, and Soulmates

Picture this: A secluded Santa Cruz beach, two lovebirds, and a photographer with a camera bag that almost became fish food. Sounds like the perfect recipe for an unforgettable engagement shoot, right? Well, that’s exactly what happened as this love brew simmered into a deliciously unforgettable moment when I met the adorable S+K for their seaside session!

The Magic of Santa Cruz Beaches

Santa Cruz beaches are a photographer’s dream. The mix of soft, golden sand, dramatic rock formations, and even a few fossil blessed rocks (if you are lucky to find them) create a diverse and visually captivating setting. Combined with the ever-changing weather adding a touch of unpredictability and beauty to each session, it’s no wonder S+K chose this spot for their engagement photos. It was a place close to their hearts, and honestly it is now one of my favorite spots as well!

Beaches, in general, make for killer photos because they’re basically nature’s perfect backdrop. You’ve got the horizon (hello, symbolism for your distant future together), the ever-changing light that can go from soft and romantic to dramatic and moody faster than you can say “I do,” and the soothing sound of waves that can calm even the most camera-shy couple

Santa Cruz beaches in particular have so much to offer. Want dramatic cliffs? Check. Soft sand between your toes? Double-check. Potential for a surprise cameo by a sea lion? Triple-check!

Embracing the Elements

The shore winds that day were giving everyone a free exfoliation session, but did we let it dampen our spirits? Heck no! We embraced it like a day at the spa, with my camera bag getting so relaxed it almost went on an unplanned vacation to Hawaii (oops), but thanks to my waterproof pro gear we avoided any equipment casualties!

As we moved along the beach, we discovered some incredible rocks that had visible trilobite fossils that added a unique element to the photos. We played around with the wind, letting it add movement to their hair and clothes. The combination of S+K’s natural chemistry and the stunning scenery made for some truly memorable shots. 

We ended the session with plenty of laughter and fun, capturing the genuine connection between S and K and an absolutely lovely sunset. The key to a successful engagement shoot is truly to enjoy the experience and let your love shine through. Santa Cruz provided the perfect canvas for S+K’s story, and I feel so lucky to have been part of it.
